There is no single right answer. But there is a right answer for your cottage, and it comes down to three things — how the building is built, how often you will actually visit, and how reliable your hydro is once the storms roll in. Here is an honest look at both strategies, the hybrid that sits between them, and how to figure out which one fits.

Strategy A: drain it down and let it sit cold

The first approach is a full winterization. You drain every water line, empty the tanks and traps, treat the plumbing with non-toxic antifreeze, and then walk away with the heat off — some owners cut the power at the panel entirely.

The appeal is simple. With no water left in the lines, there is nothing for a freeze to find, and you are not depending on the furnace to keep running or the hydro to stay up all season. In Strategy B the water is left in the lines, so a furnace or power failure has something to freeze. Draining the lines removes the middle step entirely.

The hybrid: drain the water, keep a little heat on

There is a middle path a lot of owners settle on, and it is often the smartest of the three: drain the plumbing completely, and keep a low heat running in the building.

At first that sounds contradictory — why heat a cottage with no water in it? The reason is the building itself. Draining the lines takes the plumbing-freeze risk off the table. Keeping a low, steady heat is for the sake of the structure and its finishes: the drywall, trim, flooring, and cabinetry that do not love swinging through months of deep cold and the damp that rides along with it. The hybrid still leans on the power staying on, so it is not fully independent of hydro. How to actually decide whether to heat or winterize

How reliable is your hydro? This is the one people underweight. There is one more input that is not about the building at all: your insurance. Many home and cottage policies carry specific expectations for a vacant building over winter, and the wording often hinges on exactly this heat-versus-drain choice.

Some policies expect a heated building to be kept at a minimum temperature and checked on a set schedule. Others are written around a fully drained, shut-down building.
